Matrescence, Membership Fees, and the Monetization of Our Pain

This last month has been really heavy around here. If you’ve been listening to the Breathe N Bounce podcast, you know we don’t really do sugar-coating. We sit right in the middle of the mess, the panic attacks, the parenting burnout, the sheer exhaustion of trying to figure out who the hell we are after life completely rewires our brains.

And right on cue, as August rolls around, we’re launching our little series called "Align with Your Soul and Your Wallet."

Oh, God. I hate the word align. Michael hates it even more. It’s right up there with manifest, synergy, and pivot, one of those slick, sanitized corporate buzzwords that wellness gurus love to slap on a $4,000 package to make you feel like your anxiety is just a misaligned chakra waiting to be corrected by their credit card processing system.

Let’s be completely honest for a second. It’s a pretty shitty place to be when you’re drowning in postpartum identity loss, completely overwhelmed by modern parenthood, and the universe’s best recommendation is a $400-a-month wellness club or a certified "matrescence coach" who wants three grand upfront to help you find your inner goddess.

Who comes up with these things? Is there a way out? Or are we just watching the wellness industry monetize our deepest, rawest vulnerabilities?

The Price Tag on Becoming a Mother

Let’s talk about matrescence, that massive, terrifying psychological and social earthquake of becoming a mother. It’s like adolescence, but with sleep deprivation, screaming toddlers, and a complete erasure of your former self. It’s messy, lonely, and frankly, sometimes depressing as hell.

So what does the modern wellness-industrial complex do? They take this sacred, agonizing human transition and turn it into a high-ticket transformation funnel.

You look online for some peer support or guidance because you feel like you’re losing your mind, and what do you find? Multi-month programs priced at $1,500 to $5,000+. High-tier coaching packages marketed as the ultimate shortcut to "finally feeling like yourself again."

Think about the sheer audacity of that. You are sitting on your kitchen floor in sweatpants you haven't washed in three days, wondering why you want to cry because your kid poured cereal into the air vent, and a sponsored ad pops up: “Transform your matrescence journey with our 12-week VIP mastermind!” For the low, low price of your grocery budget for the next three months.

It’s predatory disguised as empowerment. They take normal human suffering, fear, isolation, exhaustion, and reframe it as a "high-value problem" that requires premium investment. Because nothing heals a fractured nervous system quite like looking at a cleared bank account.

$400 a Month to Breathe Clean Air

And it doesn't stop at motherhood. Let’s look at the broader wellness space. We’ve got social clubs charging mortgage-level monthly dues just so you can sit in an infrared sauna, drink organic ceremonial matcha, and network with other people who bought into the exact same aesthetic.

Since when did taking care of your mental health require a VIP membership card?

We’ve turned healing into an exclusive country club. If you can’t drop four hundred bucks a month on cold plunges, sound baths, and breathwork workshops led by someone named River who just finished a two-week certification in Bali, are you even doing wellness? Are your chakras even functioning?

It’s the ultimate tribalism. It creates this toxic dichotomy where true mental health support is treated as a luxury luxury good for the privileged, while everyone else is left to scroll through free Instagram carousels telling them to "just protect their peace" while their lives burn down.

We explore the idiocy of this tribalism and brainwashing all the time on Breathe N Bounce. The unnecessary calling out crap that people do in the name of "self-care" is exhausting. Self-care shouldn’t require a line of credit. If your wellness routine requires you to take out a small business loan, it’s not wellness, it’s marketing.

Certifications, Funnels, and the Commodification of Connection

Then there’s the certification machine. Have you noticed how everyone and their dog is selling a certification now? Life coach, trauma-informed guide, breathwork facilitator, somatics practitioner, all for the low, low investment of $10,000 to $50,000.

People are hurting, so they look for community and purpose. They want to help others because they survived their own deep holes. And what do predatory coaching mills do? They hook into that exact desire for connection and purpose, convincing exhausted, vulnerable people that the only way to heal is to buy their certification program, build a funnel, and start selling high-ticket packages to other hurting people.

It’s a pyramid scheme with sage and crystals. We’ve commodified human connection. We’ve turned empathy into a scalable business model with recurring revenue streams and quarterly launch targets.

How We Find a Way Out

So how do we break out of this? Is there any hope left, or are we doomed to pay $45 for a jar of mushroom dust forever?

We can start with ourselves. We can learn to not be too hard on ourselves for wanting quick fixes when we’re desperate. It’s completely human to want someone to swoop in with a high-ticket program and fix our brains. When you’re drowning, you’ll reach for any floating stick, even if it has a hefty price tag attached.

But true healing doesn’t live in a masterclass. It doesn't require a monthly subscription fee or an Instagrammable yoga retreat in Tulum.

It lives in messy, honest conversations. It lives in sitting with your friends and admitting, "Hey, I am not okay, and I am broke, and I am tired." It lives in finding spaces: like our podcast community at Breathe N Bounce: where we talk about the raw reality of mental health without trying to sell you a $5,000 transformation package at the end of the episode.

We don't need to "align" with our wallets to find peace. We just need to stop buying into the lie that our pain has a retail price. Let’s drop the pretense, drop the membership fees, and start holding space for each other for free. Because at the end of the day, real community doesn’t invoice you.
