WISE ASS WEDNESDAY

I Love Yoga, But I'm Questioning Who Gets to Afford It

An empty luxury yoga studio with soft warm lighting reflecting off hardwood floors

This last month has been really heavy for me. Between juggling daily anxieties, trying to keep my head above water with work, and wondering why my nervous system feels permanently stuck in fight-or-flight mode, I decided I needed to get back on the mat. You know, do the whole self-care routine. Breathe deep, stretch out the tight knots in my shoulders, and maybe, just maybe, find some inner peace before I lose my absolute mind.

So, I looked up a local studio. And then I choked on my coffee.

Thirty-five dollars. For one hour. In a room full of people breathing heavily in expensive matching leggings.

Welcome to August, folks. Our official theme here at Breathe N Bounce is "Align with Your Soul and Your Wallet." Now, I have to confess something right out of the gate: Michael absolutely detests the word "align." He hates it with a fiery, burning passion. Every time someone says we need to "align our energy" or "align with our highest truth," he practically rolls his eyes into the back of his skull. And honestly? I'm right there with him. Because in the modern wellness industrial complex, "aligning with your soul" usually translates directly to "empty your checking account."

Who comes up with these things? Is there a way out? Or are we just supposed to accept that peace of mind is now a luxury good reserved for people with venture capital portfolios?

The Absurd Mathematics of Modern "Healing"

Let’s be real for a second. It’s such a shitty place to be when you desperately need to take care of your mental health, but every avenue of healing comes with a shiny digital credit card reader attached to it.

Let’s break down the math of getting your zen on in 2026. You want to take a beginner vinyasa class at a trendy boutique studio? That’s $35 for the drop-in. Oh, you need a mat rental? Add $3. A locker key? Well, bring your own lock or rent one. By the time you park your car (another $15 because heaven forbid parking is free), you’ve dropped fifty bucks just to touch your toes for sixty minutes.

Multiply that by three times a week because you're stressed out and trying not to snap at your kids or your coworkers. That’s $150 a week. $600 a month. That’s literally a car payment. That’s groceries for two weeks. That’s a utility bill that keeps the lights on in a house where people are already struggling to breathe.

And don’t even get me started on memberships. "Sign up for our unlimited auto-renew for just $275 a month!" Wow, what a bargain! As long as I cancel my health insurance and stop eating avocados, I’ll be completely enlightened by autumn.

We talk endlessly on our podcast about overcoming depression, dealing with anxiety, and navigating life's heavy challenges. But we rarely talk about the elephant in the studio: the financial gatekeeping of wellness.

Who Gets Left Behind?

Here’s the part that really pisses me off. The wellness industry loves to preach about inclusivity, community, and opening your heart chakra. But walk into almost any high-end yoga studio in a major city, and look around. What do you see?

You see homogeneity. You see $128 leggings, organic matcha bars in the lobby, and an unspoken dress code that screams, “If your bank account doesn’t look like a tech startup exit, you might be in the wrong room.”

Meanwhile, the people who actually need nervous system regulation the most: single parents working two shifts, frontline workers running on fumes, folks drowning in debt or battling crushing depression: are priced out before they even step through the front door. We tell people dealing with trauma to "just breathe, do yoga, and meditate," while simultaneously making those tools as inaccessible as a first-class ticket to Bali.

Is it any wonder we feel so isolated? When self-care becomes a status symbol, failing to afford it feels like a personal moral failure. I’m depressed, anxious, and broken, and apparently, I’m too poor to fix it. What a fantastic mental loop to trap ourselves in. We come out from the deep holes we create for ourselves, only to find someone standing at the edge of the pit holding a clipboard and charging admission to throw down a rope.

Escaping the Wellness Trap (Without Quitting Our Sanity)

So what do we do? Do we give up yoga entirely and just scroll through TikTok until our brains turn to ash?

Of course not. But we do need to get a little rebellious about how we consume wellness. We need to strip away the commercial fluff, the curated Instagram aesthetic, and the overpriced bamboo water bottles, and get back to what actually matters: movement, breath, and community.

Here are a few small ways we can start reclaiming our practice without selling a kidney:

  1. Embrace the Imperfect Home Practice: You don't need a heated studio with bamboo floors and ambient eucalyptus mist to stretch your hamstrings. Roll out a beat-up towel or an old mat in your living room. Pull up a free YouTube video. If your dog steps on your back in Downward Dog, even better: that’s authentic grounding.
  2. Seek Out Community and Donation-Based Classes: There are still teachers, community centers, and grassroots spaces offering sliding-scale or free classes. Support them. Ask around in local mental health and wellness circles.
  3. Call Out the Crap: Let’s stop pretending that spending $4,000 on a silent wellness retreat in Costa Rica is a basic human necessity. It’s a luxury vacation. And it’s okay to admit that. Honesty keeps us grounded.
  4. Remember That Healing Isn't a Product: No essential oil, yoga block, or boutique membership can buy peace of mind. They can be nice tools, sure: we love our natural aids and holistic routines just as much as anyone: but they are never prerequisites for worthiness.

Let’s Keep the Conversation Going

I know how difficult it can be to navigate a world that commercializes every single breath we take. Some days, the financial pressure alone is enough to trigger a full-blown panic attack. And if you're sitting there feeling priced out of your own healing process, I want you to know you aren't crazy for feeling angry about it.

We don't need to "align" our souls with corporate profit margins to find peace. We can start right where we are, with whatever we have left in our wallets, and build our own safe spaces from the ground up.

Take a deep breath with me. Let’s not be too hard on ourselves for living in a messy, expensive world. And if you want to dive deeper into these messy, unfiltered conversations about mental health, survival, and finding a way forward when life gets heavy, check out our latest episodes over at Breathe N Bounce.

We’re in this together. Let’s keep talking, keep questioning, and keep moving forward.
